Le Shopping

Les jeunes aiment le shopping et le mode en France. I took these pictures during my study abroad in Montpellier, France. My roommate, Mlle Braun, appears in the second picture ( far right, chemise rose) with some of her French students she tutored at a local junior high school. Compare the style of the French students to the way you and your friends dress. Is it similar to American teenage style?

  1. Without trying to embarrass my own fashion sense I would think that they way those students dress seem pretty similar to our own, except maybe a little bit more stylish. ex: the armbands and the scarves around their neck. Altogether though they look pretty similar. What a great idea! Was this your own idea to do?

  2. When I was student teaching my students always asked me how the French dressed so I knew that many of them were interested in seeing what they looked like. I like to show them pictures like this after talking about stereotypical French dress (berets, striped shirt)so they realize that our two cultures are perhaps more similar than they think they are.

  3. One thing I noticed when I was in France a few years ago was that people do not go around in pajamas, slippers, sweats, and the like. Their dress was often casual and comfortable but not like "just rolled out of bed". I did not ask, but I imagine many of them would find it unthinkable to go out in pajamas or sweats.

Otherwise, fashion seems quite similar here and in France. T-shirts and jeans/pants have a universal appeal.

  4. I feel that this is a great tool to reach out to students who may not be interested solely in french. To answer your questions I thought they girls would be wearing more risky clothes in france, but to my astonishment they appear to have very similiar style and fashion as Americans.
