Les Bleus

En France les jeunes aiment le football. Aux-États-Unis, on joue le football-américain. Le foot ou le football is extremely popular in France and in French-speaking African countries. Students often play soccer at school and watch matches on tv. I included this post in my blog so that you can make comparisions between the cultures of France and the United States based upon their favorite sports. Why do you think that soccer is played all over the world, while football has not caught on much outside of the U.S.? Is football truly an American game?

  1. Bonjour!

I enjoyed working through your blog, and I was able to get a good cultural feel of what the people of France are like. I think the topics you chose (music, professional sports, celebrities and shopping) are great points of comparison because i was able to use my life experiences to relate to and analyze these cultural practices within the French culture.

I think the "football" post is especially relevant, as the World Cup is currently being played out. Also, from a male student's perspective, i was more interested and immediately drawn to sports as opposed to shopping or music...however, i have become a big fan of "allez, allez, allez il faut danser" too.

I am not sure why soccer is wildly popular in virtually every country besides America...is it because we don't use the metric system? jk. There was an interesting debate about this topic on a recent Colbert Report.

  2. I often wonder why soccer is not as popular in the US as other sports. Sometimes I think it is our way of being different from the rest of the world. Also, we are a very large country (much bigger than most European countries) and maybe that has something to do with the reason. With more people you have more interests as well as different body types. The other popular sports players (football, hockey, basketball, baseball) tend to have different body types than those that play soccer. It is something that really interests me because football is so big in the US and in Europe they could care less.

  3. Interesting question: I've often wondered this as well. Having traveled around the world, America is really the only country that embraces "American football". None of the countries I visited even had clubs or minor leagues set up for it.

You certainly do not see as many Americans getting hyped up about the World Cup as they do with Super Bowl or March Madness.

I do agree with the above comment about our country being so large with diverse interests. In some countries people might not care for the sport but they will cheer their team on regardless. Whereas here, I wonder how many people are even aware that the World Cup is going on and if they are supporting our team.

  4. I feel that futbol is not as popular in America becasue we were not the country that devoloped it. If you think about the popular sports, basketball, football, and even hockey - they were all created and popularized in the American culture. (Canada is almost as Amercanized as you get) So I feel that soccer stayed popular in other countries because the big time athletes stay over there near families and friends where they have been for decades. All the other sports is vice versa, the big names stay near America where they have been for decades.

  5. I think the real hold up to soccer in the US is that they have not figured out how to place 5 minutes of commercials every 15 minutes of play, since once soccer starts it does not stop.
